When the actors were finally deemed acceptable horsemen, Thornton took three days to shoot the breaking sequences with 20 horses. When searching for a mount for Lucas Black he looked at saddlebreds, walking horses and thoroughbreds, finally selecting a little bay quarter horse which appealed to director Billy Bob Thornton.īilly Bob Thornton is a self-described ‘Brony’, a male fan of My Favorite Pony. ![]() Hendrickson supplied ‘Dollar’, his own chestnut quarter horse gelding to work as Damon’s ‘Redbo’, and cast his grey QH ‘Ghost’ as Henry Thomas’s ‘Junior’. Most had been in hundreds of movies and nothing ruffles them.” “The horses were incredible,” continued Damon. It was all about feeling totally confident and giving the impression we’d lived with horses all our lives. We’d be trotting and Rex would say, ‘Okay, we’ll walk around here in a figure of eight, but I want it to be perfect’, so we’d first do it at a trot and then at a gallop. Drills were also a large part of the training. We’d saddle the horses in the morning, unsaddle them at night and brush them. “We’d ride for eight hours every single day. “We worked with Rusty Hendrickson and his wranglers Rex Peterson and Monty Stuart,” recalled Damon. Damon and Thomas were especially dedicated, riding horses for five weeks. A month before production began the actors spent time in Texas perfecting their riding skills. ![]()

How it got resolved just didn’t work for me either. It’s like the authors just didn’t know how to make the ups and downs in this book. Finally the drama at the end and Mal’s freak out, the things he said, and his decisions were just ridiculous. The whole premise seemed a bit awkward and unnecessary, and the drama of faking didn’t seem to be enough to base a story on. Actually, all the female characters weren’t likeable. Paul is portrayed as overwhelmed by her beauty, and her liking being adored by him despite his “thinning hair”. She was petty and shallow, and we were supposed to like her? The only “redeeming” feature the authors gave was that she was pretty. However, this book had too many annoying things. She seems to have a loyal following that leave over inflated positive reviews so it’s always difficult to really gauge how good a book of hers is. This book would have been heading towards a typical 3 star ok read which is what I usually give Lucy Lennox stories, with their small town characters and slightly cringeworthy humour. ![]() ![]() ![]() She finally escaped through a death-defying hike over the Pyrenees into Spain, her cover blown.
